Interpreting The Signs Of The Times (2)
    Ted Schroder - October 5, 2008

We all long for peace and prosperity. Looking at an order form for Christmas cards the other day, I noted that the greetings conveyed good wishes for a peaceful, and joyful Christmas, and a prosperous New Year. Yet the times in which we find ourselves are far from these sentiments. Every day there seems to be news of more turmoil in the world. What is happening? What is God saying to us in the events of the day? How should we respond to the drumbeat of alarmist rhetoric? If God is a God of history, who is involved in our lives, and directing our destiny, then we should look for signs of his presence. This is what Jesus taught his contemporaries, and his lesson is meant to guide us today. He told them to take note of what was happening and to respond accordingly. “You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?” (Luke 12:56)

Jesus called on his hearers to note the nature of the time in which they live. Likewise we should be able to interpret what is happening around us. We should be able to see what God is doing in the world around us, and in our own lives. Everything has a spiritual dimension. We need to see current events through the eyes of faith. You do not explain everything solely by material cause and effect. There are human virtues and vices involved. There are angels and demons to be recognized. Spiritual forces are at work.
